INTENSIFIED EFFORTS TO OPEN VAST CHINESE MARKET FOR MERU TEA

The Governor of Meru County H.E. Kiraitu Murungi has this evening taken a delegation of Chinese investors in the tea sector, on a guided tour of tea production in the County. The investors took keen interest in tea farming regions of Kiegoi in Igembe area, Michii Mikuru in Tigania, and Imenti South and Githongo in the region of Imenti, where they were highly impressed by the high quality of tea produced.

Governor Kiraitu noted that since Chinese Companies are major suppliers of tea to North Africa, and that tea comes all the way from China, Meru County Government will be seeking to create partnerships between local tea factories, farmers and the Chinese Companies, so that they can buy the tea supplied to North Africa from Meru. The tour culminated into a visit of Githongo Tea Factory where the team sampled the best taste of Meru tea
The Chinese delegation leader on tea matters(also known as the “Tea Master”), Mr. Xie Yongzhong, who is leader of tea marketing and trade in China, said they were very happy to explore tea production in the County, and will be looking into areas of cooperation to make tea farming a profitable sector in Meru as a model in the region. This is expected to be a great boost to tea farming in Meru, to empower and improve welfare of farmers in line with the Governor’s vision to Make Meru Great, and also an initiative in ‘agrotourism’, which combines Governor Kiraitu’s vision to improve tourism and agriculture in Meru County.
